Tennis is a fast, multi-directional aerial sport. The tennis ball may approach the players at extremely high speed. Thus, while illuminance quantity and quality are most critical; illuminance uniformity, direct glare, and reflected glare come in a close second. Other important factors to consider when designing illumination for tennis facilities are:
Playing Areas – The boundary line of a double’s tennis court is approximately 11 meters wide by 23.8 meters (36 x 78’) long with a court boundary area of 261 square meters (2,808sf). However, the overall court area of a tennis court is considerably larger than the court boundary area because the ball should be playable far beyond the court boundaries. Normally, the overall court area of a single tennis court is 18.3 by 36.6 meters (60 x 120’) with an area of 669 square meters (7,200sf). For Class I and II facilities, the overall court area may be as much as to 24.4 by 45.7 meters (80 x 150’) with an area of 1,115 square meters (12,000sf). For illumination design purposes, the overall court surface may be subdivided into two distinct areas:
• Primary Playing Area – the area bounded by the lines 1.83 meters (6’) beyond the double’s lines and 3.0 meters (9.8’) behind the base lines; a total area of 437 square meters (4.704sf).
• Secondary Playing Area – the difference between overall court surface area and the primary playing area. It varies, depending on the size of overall court surface, ranging from 232 to 651 square meters 253 to 712 sq. yds.).
The recommended illuminance criteria for tennis courts apply to the entire primary playing area. Illuminance for the secondary playing areas may be gradually reduced, but not below 70 per cent of the average illuminance of the primary playing area.
